Want to drive this road? I sure do. I’ve never been able to in a cool car, only in a truck. It’s all the way north just before you get on a ferry to go over to Washington Island. Would love the sling the Corvette into and out of each of these curves. It’s called Door County Curvy Highway, and it’s smoothly paved and fantastic.
If you haven’t been to Door County yet, you really have to. It’s absolutely beautiful especially in the summer. Most of the roads are in very good shape. There are a ton of great restaurants too. I personally love the Wild Tomato. It’s a wood fired pizza place in Fish Creek. They have an excellent selection of beers, outdoor seating, and the best pizza I’ve had here in Wisconsin. We opted for the Margherita, but you can go as crazy as you like with the toppings, and they all come out good. (try adding chicken to one, it’s fantastic). They also have a location in Sister Bay right downtown.
There are a ton of cool shops in Fish Creek too. They’re all concentrated in the small downtown, so you can park and walk to all of them within ten minutes or so. My wife loved popping in and out of all of them seeing what each had to offer. There’s some cool cherry themed foods, some Wisconsin branded clothing, unique jewelry stores, and even a trading post type store with knives and furs.
We stayed in Ephram, which was cool since we woke up overlooking the water every day. Wilson’s Ice Cream Parlor was right near us. They have excellent ice cream and burgers and have waterfront seating. (Note: Ephram is a dry town, so if you want a drink with your dinner you’ll have to go elsewhere.) Next time I go I’ll probably opt for Sister Bay as it has quite a few more restaurants, many of which have live music at night. There are hotels right downtown you can walk to which is really nice. We opted to see a classic rock cover band at Al Johnson’s which has a huge outdoor area with a walk up bar and small stage for the band. There are high top tables scattered about and plenty of seating. This place does get busy though. They also serve a fantastic breakfast. Their specialty is Swedish pancakes, which if you haven’t had them are very similar to a Frech Crepe. Be prepared to wait though. On the weekends this place gets mobbed and you could wait over an hour for a table.
There are a ton of cool cars up here on any given weekend. I must have counted a dozen Corvettes by the time we had reached Fish Creek, never mind going further up north. Lots of C7’s and C8’s & some cool classics. A good amount of Porsche’s. One or two Ferraris. Tons of people just cruising the main drag until the sun goes down. I can’t wait to take the car up and cruise with the top down on a warm summer night. Just a few turns and a few miles and you can explore the back side of the peninsula which offers some much quieter roads.
So why wait any longer? Call or email today for availability and spend an unforgettable day, weekend, or week up in door county cruising in style, and having the most fun driving you can in Wisconsin.
